Welcome to the Kast Hill Studio Workshops page!  I’m not currently scheduling workshops.  However, if you’re interested in private lessons or group workshops please contact me.  Below is a sampling of classes I have offered in the past.

Introduction to the Ancient Art of Mosaic
10am-4pm Sat. & 10am-12pm Sun. (BYO lunch)
$150 fee includes all materials
In this fun and informative 2 day workshop you’ll learn the basics of mosaic using modern materials such as recycled stained glass, mirror pieces and “gems.” You’ll be creating your mosaic on a pre-framed flat panel that will be ready to hang (indoors) when you leave class. On day one, we’ll discuss design elements, how to prepare your surface or substrate, cutting or nipping your glass pieces and choices of cements and adhesives. Then you’ll create your mosaic using the methods I’ve shown you. On day two, you’ll be ready to grout your mosaic! You’ll learn this and how polish and finish your piece. This workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to learn the basics to create a beautiful mosaic. Come prepared to have a great time! Class size 8 people.

“Pique Assiette” Style Mosaic
10am to 4pm Sat. & 10am -12pm Sun. (BYO lunch)
$125 fee includes all materials (Feel free to bring anything you’d like to include!)

Pique Assiette is a form of art that specifically uses broken plates and the like arranged in patterns or designs. The name comes from the French pique-assiette, meaning “one who eats from others’ plates”. Pique assiette is a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics—plates, dishes, cups, tiles—and other found objects into the design. The appeal and expressiveness of pique assiette lies in the ideas of lateral thinking, humour, recycling, and the significance of the found objects. This form of art is believed to have been originally introduced by Raymond Isadore known as the “father of French pique assiette”. He discovered his bits of colored glass and pottery in the fields surrounding his house in Chartres, outside of Paris, and spent his life covering every surface of the inside and outside of the house and his garden area. He supplemented his shards with stuff from auctions, quarries and the public dump. His home is a popular tourist attraction and is known as “Maison Picassiette”.
Would you like to learn how to work with pieces of broken china? We’ll be creating a mosaic picture or mirror frame.  In this 2-day workshop you’ll learn how to use broken china to create fantastic effects.  On day one, I’ll talk about design, color and placement. You’ll learn breaking and cutting techniques for the china.  Then you’ll attach your pieces, learning about adhesives.  On day two, we’ll grout the mosaic, clean and give it a final polish.   This is my favorite style of mosaic making!  Class size 8 people.
